Your timing will be perfect Bram, weather permitting. looks like a stronge return this year.Lots of steel in the mainstem now. big water, big fish, big fight. Friend just called me two on the dry today... good luck and have a safe flight in... :cheers:sage
the return has been weak enough that the town of Smithers is going to try and pressure the goverment to curtail more of the commercial fishing in July/August next year. Over 20 guys including guides on the lower Bulkley near the mouth of the Suskwa one day this past week for no fish. Phone the local tackle shops up there and you will find lots of dismal reports and they usually try to talk it up to bring in fishermen.
i'm up in houston now. fished hard all day with hardware in my secret money holes and runs. nothing... dead, not even a hit. talked to the guy up the street from my parents house he hasn't heard of any steelies caught and only one coho ouch! i might be driving to kitimat this week and fish hatchery system not what i want
Went to kitimat for a couple days . first day it was a little slow then around 2 hours from high tide it was on fire for about 3 hours after. i was drifting tiny gobs of roe down center of the hatchery pool and it was just a steady flow of fresh chrome fish . they were just tapping lightly in typical coho fashion but the hits were steady and they were all chrome 10lb average . the guys using spoons weren't fairing as well . they were hitting so light you had to be right in your float but it was really fun . the nest day it was stone dead, only saw a few fish hooked but we missed the high tide. if you heading that way and its slow don't dispare wait for the high tides and it can change in a hurry
fished Owen Flats on the morice today and lucked out got into a whole whack of cohos. some were dark some were in nice shape but plenty of action for a while but after a few hours the fish went through and it slowed down.
apparently the nets have been pulled and good numbers of fish are in the rivers now ( its amazing what happens when there isnt any gill nets stretched across the river) If i can get my moose this weekend, may head out next weekend
