fishing the Vedder the past couple of months, I finally caught my first steelhead!
I went out on April 6th just before lunch and fished quite a few spots. I started at Ways Field with some blades and hooked into something. At first I thought it was a pretty weak steelhead, but after I got in back close to the bank I saw it was a Dollie. Not bad, but not what I was looking for.
I then went to Borden Creek, fished there and saw nothing. Then went to the Piles place in Yarrow and didn't see or get anything. Drove back down Chwk Lake Rd and thought I might check out Thurston Meadows. When I got there I didn't really know where to go, so I asked the people in the little check-in/info building. One guy was really nice and told me where to fish and how to fish the pool. I fished it the way the guy told me and, Wham! I hook into something and it snaps my leader right away. Retie and cast again and have another fish on! After a few times of hooking into a steelhead and loosing it, I'm finally able to land this one, my first one! It was a doe(maybe 10 pounds) and starting to colour. It was pretty hard to unhook because I was by myself, but I remembered what Hook(i think it was him) said about stroking the belly of the fish. As soon as I did that, the fish calmed down, I unhooked it, revived it and it swam away.
Sorry there's no pics. I don't usually take them when I'm by myself fishing.
Thanks for all the help! :beerchug:
