Sorry guys, haven't fished the skagit in a long, long time...looking forward to your reports though... ;)

The skagit is fishing well right now. Back down to normal flow. Should do good there, fish the bumpy water. ;)

Good Luck, Nates
have you heard of anything larger moving in? I found in the high water the fish sized seemed to go down considerably
If the river is looking as good as Nates says, try the Sumallo Grove area. Use the usual small parachute styled dries, but don't be afraid to throw some bigger terrestrial sized bugs...size 8 or 10 Tom Thumb...smaller adult dragonfly patterns. I had a savage take on a dragonfly once...I went to set the hook and SNAP! Took the only dragon pattern I had! The fish must have been at least 16+ inches...I then tied on a light brown Thumb and landed his smaller buddy a short time later.

Question: Are there any major hatches going on currently on this river?
i read this thing about the Skagit and it said that most people target the small scrappy rainbows but there are actually a good abundance of good sized bull trout in there also

anyone hook any of those good fighters in there?? i guess egg patterns and things would work great for them eh

yup there are dollies in there.

Leach, muddler, small zonker type patterns in the deeper pools can get a rise from the depths.

Finder ;)
Dollies...a sink tip would work quite well with a nice sized leech. Bead headed leeches would be an added bonus. I have seen them in small schools holding in the current lazily picking off nymphs that lose their footing and drift down the river. I have tried to catch them with larger bead headed stonefly nymphs with no success. I didn't put in the time needed though.
ok i was wondering if anyone has caught any of them in good size though cause this article(advertisement kind of thing) talking about the river and fish species in there said they average 2-3lbs in there which is way bigger than their smaller rainbow buddies in that system

I remember fishing a deep pool in the lower Skagit a year or 2 ago with a dry fly. Hit a fair few little bows from this one large pool, then packed my gear up to move on. Right as i packed up, another fisherman moved in and fished a sinking pattern deep into the pool, first cast, and came out with a huge dolly. I'd guesstimate 5lb-ish.
Thx for all the info guys! Headed up there before getting a chance to read your replies; nontheless we ended having a pretty decent day between myself and my friend. I have only been there a couple of times and managed to get 1 or 2 fish each time. This time was much better as we were both into double-digits ;D :D
The day for us started out very very slow. in about a 3hr period, with lots of water covered, we only had 2 each to show for our efforts. :'( Then alof a sudden, on our way back up river, we started to see lots of risers in water we had simply walked past earlier in the day. Once the hatch started in the evening we were both ino easily 10 fish each in a 2 hr time window. As for the dollies I have always heard of them but we actually saw one swim right at our feet then quickly swan off as we spooked it. I would say he must have been a good solid 3-4lb'er. Deffinatly had loads of fun and is worth the loooonnnnngggg drive out. :beerchug:
BC Outdoors Fishing last month had an article on the Skagit and entrance from the Sumallo Grove area.
Talked about the upper river above 26 mile bridge and the dams put in by Seattle Light and Power and the fight by BC regarding Ross Lake.
Legend has it a well known BC angler (a fellow by the name of........) caught a small rainbow there. On the end of the rainbow was a 12 pound bull trout that refused to let go until he angler was about to attempt the "net shot."
I few years ago i was drifting a larger stonefly pattern in one of the deeper pools when this very large black shadow moved out of the depths and absolutely demolished my fly (I was using my 4wt at the time) needless to say a battle ensued and at the end I came out victorious. This was before the age of digital cameras so I will dig out the picture and see if I can scan it. I have targeted these fish a few times and the majority of my success has come from very large leech patters and rabbit hair zonkers. Just a word of warning if people plan on targeting them they are bigger so take a larger weight rod as to not stress the fish too much and be cautious as always on the release...these are old fish.
hey Srethy

lets do a trip up there my 5wt can handle all them little guys and the big boys

just need to know what flies i need and sizes (pm it to me if you wanna go)

me i would go however i dont know where im going AT ALL never been there before in my life

My buddy has been up there in the past with a 30' 5th wheel, so you should have no trouble. You might want to use 1/2 of one of the double sites tho', if they are available..
