Hey guys, I am back from my 18 month stay in Japan and ready to get back at 'er. I am heading up to fish the Thompson around Ashcroft/Juniper Beach area from July 22-25. I haven't been for a couple of years, but I imagine the fishing is still stellar! Has anyone been up lately, if so how did you make out? Any other suggestions on where to fish in that area? I may also get a chance to fish Tunkwa, I don't have much experience with stillwater trout but from what I've read micro leeches and chironomids are the ticket any other suggestions? thanks, I should have something for the "trout porn" when I return!

Heya Gibbs, welcome back!

The T was a little high still on the 3rd of July when I drove through, but it should be dropping nicely and the fishing should be good by the weekend you're going, if not sooner. If you're going to be in the Juniper beach area, you might try walking upriver a mile or so from the campground, the corner there near the small farm along the steep bank can be quite good...around the bridge at Walachin (sp.) can also be productive.

As for Tunkwa, it's going to start getting slower soon with the heat of summer, but there should be some decent chironomid hatches, bombers in particular...if the water temp is way up, you might concentrate on the deepest parts of the lake which is only about 20 ft to the best of my recollection. The fish may congregate there if the rest of the lake seems slow.

Good luck and let us know how you do...
