I have a bunch of tomic plugs in the 5, 6 & 7" size. (just like a women can't have too many shoes. At least that's what my wife says) Anyway I bought another 30 - 40 off ebay this year. About half of them came with a ring through the tow bar. I have always tied the plugs directly to the line using a knot on the top of the tow bar. Has anyone used the rings that go through the tow bar, or should I just cut them off????

Holmes is our resident plug dude, he'll probably chime in any time now......

I have better luck cutting and pulling the tow bar.
Just run the line thru the hole left in the plug (closest to center) then adding a large bead or 2 and tying the hook directly to the mainline.

I have always tied a 4' leader to the tow bar then a bead chain.
Great for quick change.
I have great luck with plugs. The 7" 727 killed em in Winter Harbor last August.

u can always just leave the ring on and tie to the towbar, when u tie to the ring it will give the plug an erratic action, i have like 3 or 4 of all my plugs, some with the pin pulled some with just the ring off and some with the ring on, when u tie to the ring u will notice a little nub where the ring has been welded together, tie to the ring opposite of the nub and rest the nub on the tow bar, this nub will rub across the tow bar creating some wicked action, i honestly dont pull the pin too often, but hey experimenting is what its all about, one thing about pulling the pin is if ya break off the plug will float to the surface.....hope that makes sense, like i said if ya want to tie to the towbar than go ahead and leave the ring on as u may want to change it up and tie to the ring.....any other questions just ask....Iron Noggin has EXTENSIVE knowledge of plugs...the speed of yer troll plays a significant role as well..based on how your plug is rigged......holmes*

Thanks for your thoughts guys. I'll have to try various methods & will probably adopt one as my favorite based on the fish that get caught. (it may be just the right place at the right time that will lead me likeing one method over another), but I will try to give them all a fair shake.

Here's a NEW way to use a plug, but more as a dodger than a lure.

Run line through it, add a 48" leader, and tow a 4" or 5" spoon.
It murders salmon-
