As this location of story happened in tidal water I'll post it in saltwater section. 15 or so yrs ago I was biking for some needed exercise. I stopped where the Coquitlam R meets the Fraser R. It is a small bar as just down river were parked log booms... at least in those days... In the hour I watched the action or should I say NON ACTION there were no fish caught. Must of been 35 or so fishermen bar fishing. It was so crowded that possibly there was a 5 ft separation bet. each person. I was just about to go but stayed a little longer to watch this guy drive right up to the river's edge. He gets out of the car opens his truck & puts his rod together. He doesn't say a word & others do not say a word to him. He walks between two fishermen & proceeds to cast out his line. 2 ft max bet him & people on his sides !!!!!! I thought he should of waited for someone to go home & he could take a vacated spot as now there's a very high % of crossed lines. Maybe I'm wrong??? Anyways within 5 minutes this guys rod starts jumping... FISH ON !!!!! He reels in a big salmon... WOW talk about being SURPRIZED. True story. Happy Thanksgiving & God bless you all. arimaBOATER

Salmonator Ya see what ya mean... Crowded fishing at bar just like crowded Fraser R driftnetters after sockeye. But this really "freaked me out" so to say... Here was 35 or more bar fishermen standing side by side & for the hour I watched "there was abslolutely no fish caught nor was therre any "hits"... Then this guy drives up...walks between two fishermen... now it's like a crowded sardine can so to say...then WITHIN 5 MIN. his rod starts moving like crazy !!! He hauls in a 7 -9 lbs salmon !!!! Talk about DRAMA !!! Just like my dad said " We're not going to catch anything" Said this summer as we bar fished off our boat in 8ft of water after 3 hrs... As we continued to play crib BAM his rod starts moving "LIKE CRAZY" The rod was just bent over & this big spring jumps 1/2 way out of the water about 20 meters away. Then the fish just screams out the line...the drag was tightened alittle in the hope to tire & slow the run... but secs. later the line breaks "at the knot"... TOTAL TIME FISH WAS ON maybe 35 to 45 secs... That got our attention !!! The whole drama of fishing...outdoors nature dif water conditions weather using one's fishing skills...fellowship...food & drink... getting out of the busy rat race... & getting a FISH ON sometimes... No wonder fishing is so exciting & addictive !!!

Bar fishing can get very crowded on some bars... When I lived in Coquitlam 10 yrs ago one bar I went to was just south of the Port Mann bridge aprox 1/4 1/2 mile down. It wasn't that crowded at least back then. Produced fairly well. I remember one heron bird would stand like a statue but people would feed it bullhead fish... it would strike into action & swallow the fish quick... It would stand there all day getting it's free meals & it would eat like 20 or more fish HA Haven't bar fished for years from the shore but I must say it is fun. Coffee warm jacket camp fire on & on... but don't do want I did years ago when I was young & stupid... Bar fishing for 3 days with 2 friends near Hope... Steve & I decided to get into a drinking contest... his case a beer & my case a beer ...who will finish his 12 beers first. DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME as the WWE would say... I finished 12 beers in 1 hour just 1/4 beer ahead of Steve. We were so DRUNK.... I couldn't control my standing & as the land sloped to the river I found myself walking backwords into the river up to my neck...To this day I don't know who pulled me out of the water... I assume it was Renee as he did not drink.......

your lucky the Riverview guards didnt grab ya, still be in a white padded room, i was just down at the mouth reflecting a few days ago on the same spot some years ago when coho retention was allowed in October, anchored on low tide and hit after hit on good chum roe, sign of the times on the declining fish numbers

cammer Ya that area had a big farm operation ... pigs milking cows sheep crops... the Forensic Unit is where the criminally insane were hospitalized. Farm workers with help from the patients did the work......... Then over by Lougheed Hwy had the psy. hospitals. Remember the hill over at Pt Coquitlam was all forest ...plus no Mary Hill by pass... back in the 60 70's fished the bar where the Coquitlam R meets the Fraser R. Most people fished off the shore but remember seeing as many as 4 or 5 little wooden row boats anchored 60 80 ft from shore just bordering the mouth of the Coq R & seeing a fish on every 30 min to every 2 hrs. But the ones who were in the little boats caught way more fish then ones who fished from the shore.... Yes there was mobile security patrols on the roads & *****... Ya lucky they didn't arrest me ha... I have a sense of humor....... There was also this very very old bridge that crossed the Coquitlam R at the farm... farm equipment & other veicles crossing it ... at their own risk because that bridge was so old ..rotten... holes on the deck... I'd walk or ride my bike across it but always thought "how is this thing still standing" Finally they did close it. Your right though it was a great bar ... I don't know much about it today... Haven't been there for 15 ...20 yrs...
