Boy, I would be really surprised gutchecker if your buddy actually caught tuna anywhere near Sooke. Would love to hear more details. The tuna here are Albacore Tuna and they follow warm water currents up here from down south. The usual commercial fishery in BC for them occurs from 60-120 miles off the west coast of Vancouver Island and, in some years, as close as 40-60 miles off the west coast of the Queen Charlottes. I've never heard of any catches in Juan de Fuca Strait but I suppose there is always a remote chance. Sure they weren't mackeral?

The best source on the net for Albacore fishing is http://www.ifish.net/board/forumdisplay.php?f=28 you'll have to dig for a while but it's all there.

IFish is mainly an Oregon board that's the place where Albies are the closest on the their annual anti clockwise migration around the Pacific.

BTW-Your pal didn't leave from Sooke unless he was into a monster run offshore more likely he was out of Bamfield or Ukee.

For sure!

There's the one type of Mackarel not Scomber Japonicus but the other one that some people call Albacore but it ain't.
