Vancouver Port Authority

Vancouver Port Authority wishes to close sport fishing in the area around the Lion's Gate Bridge due to vessel traffic concerns. Apparently the Port has their own authorization and can do this.
There is a meeting on the 24th to "negotiate" but it looks like 14th st. Pier to Siwash to the bridge.

That is terrible. I know that they were intimidating boats in that area last year. I guess they are concerned over safety. If that is the case then they should close the area to shipping as well. Last year there wer 4 or 5 shipping accidents, and, lets see, no sport fishing accidents.

I don't think the issue has to do so much with traffic concerns, but more to do with safety concerns if one of those large barges they call freighters or cruise ships loses power or control and takes out half the fleet.

Sad. Port Authority should deal with the people who are a real menace---sailboaters who like to use navigational buoys as course markers.

Actually though, it would make life more sporting trolling off the Cap for Springs...we couldn't fish the "slots", and we'd be fishing the glock out of West Van in an ebb tide.... Hmmmm...no more 70 boat packs...

This would make life more sporting...LOL>

Re: Vancouver Port Authority

I'm begining to feel like there's less and less reasons to justify the expense of fishing locally. There are now local closures around Pt. Atkinson, Passage Island, and many other spots in Howe Sound. Adding a closure to the Cap would prevent fishing at our best and most acessible Vancouver hotspot. What's next, closure of the cap hatchery? Why bother wasting money on that when you can't fish there anyways?

Who would be the best person(s) to contact to complain about these proposed changes. Anyone have suggestions of who to send an email to?

I hear ya...

It does seem like there are fewer reasons to go fishing locally...and you're totally right.

However, a closure such as what the Port of Vancouver is proposing wouldn't be the end of the world...

There are springs and Coho to be caught elsewhere around Vancouver...and West Vancouver.

It would definitely make it more challenging as opposed to doing the loop off the green marker etc...

Personally, I have a lot more fun fishing other spots than the Cap, although I do spend quite a bit of time at the Cap, it's only about the "game" when I fish there.

They'll probably go for some compormize like back in the early 90's when they put out the mark you had to fish inside.
And what up with that rag hanger bashing, angery about gas prices or that I got right of way when your beltching smoke?
Have fun, Jason

Re: Vancouver Port Authority

And the Port Authority is the same folks who allow outbound ocean vessels to leave port at 1045 pm on a fireworks niight...
It was very interesting coming under the bridge with hundreds of other baots and having to dodge a huge ship headed out...
That was absolutely insane, the pilot on the freighter must have been craping his drawers,,I know my dear wife was.....
If we don't submit logical ideas to the Port folks , they can and will screw up the fishing in that area for us.....

Re: Vancouver Port Authority

I saw on another site that there will be no change in regulations for the area. That's good!
