Well...went and checked out the vedder for the first time since the flood. There were a few guys out there, but not many. Fished on the run most of the day trying to get a good look at as much water as possible, didn't get into any fish today, nor did we see any caught by anyone else, but there is some nice water to be found. We started up top by the cement block and worked our way down from there...
Visibility was pretty good through the top section, somewhere around 2 1/2 - 3 feet, and the water was definitely fishable. There is a new slide the river has to contend with this year in the upper section, the river divides in the top end and a side channel splits off and comes down along the east side of the river bringing in some sediment...as this is mixed in with the mainstem, the clarity quickly dropped to about 2 feet.
A little ways downstream from there, another slide comes into play...this one a little more significant, visibility dropped past this point to about 1-1.5 feet...you can see here the runoff from the first smaller slide have not yet mixed in fully...water clarity gets progressively worse as you look from one side of the river to the other...then it is added to by this bank shown here ...
We fished much of the river downstream from there to the next slide below Allison pool...
then headed downstream below tamihi to see how visibility had changed after the slides blow allison, and found visibility had detioriorated quite a bit more to less than a foot...
But still there is some nice water to be found, and lots to explore in the trips to come...
Should make for an interesting season, there's a lot of new water to scope out, a lot of changes to take note of, but the slides are of concern for me, as they obviously will affect conditions throughout the season. That's not to say there won't be good fishing to be had, even below the slides, but there will be some ever changing water clarity as we fish our way down river this year...
All in all, a good day to be out there, weather was perfect, water levels were really good and it looks like we all have another great steelhead season to look forward to.
