Hi

I'll be in Victoria for 11 days, I've never been to BC.
I booked my hotel as close to the breakwater as possible cause I read you can walk out there and catch salmon.
Is this true? Is there anyone here who likes to fish this spot.?
I'm arriving the 19th June and will be leaving the 1st July
I'll be bringing a med-heavy 9' Ugly stick with baitcaster (80lb braided) or leadcore my trusty 6' 6" baitcaster (50lb braided), not sure if I should bother bringing my 5'6" light spinning 10lb I use here(Ottawa area) for brookies, 7 wt fly rod (Ima flyfishing newbie)portable sonar in case I can rent a little boat cheap.
My goal is to catch my limit for each type of salmon,Hug one of those big ass trees, hug a sasquatch and try all the BC beers but other stuff would be fun too, I'll be mobile(rental car)
If anyone fishs Victoria area with a boat or from shore I'll buy half the gas and all the beer :drunk:
am available for two or three day excursion am experienced fisherman and woodsman.

Hi Catfish,

You'll see quite a few guys fishing from the breakwater at Ogden Pt., but I think they're mainly targeting ling cod. The breakwater is built upon large rectangular slabs of concrete that rise from the ocean floor like a pyramid so it's a great hangout for ling cod and rockfish, but you'd have to be able to cast pretty far out to get to a school of salmon. I suppose it's possible, but I haven't seen it.

You're better off going for the ling cod at the breakwater, but it takes some knowledge of the terrain to cast into the zone.

There are several lakes in close proximity to victoria (within a 20Km drive) you could fish with your spinning/fly rods, and do it from shore. Beaver, Elk and Langford lakes all have good rainbow populations along with bass. Recently (a month ago) there were 5lb rainbows coming out of Langford lake. I'm not aware of any boat rental shops in Victoria so I'd probably leave the sonar at home (unless you hook up with someone who has a boat).

If you're fishing off the breakwater, be aware that it's a big attraction for scuba divers, so watch for the floating flag. Otters/seals also inhabit that area.

I haven't seen anyone fishing for salmon there in a long while but 10-15 years ago I remember people hauling em in off the very end of the breakwater. Last time I was out there I couldn't figure out an easy way down to the lower levels but if you were with another person you could probably do it. There's also people trolling like 50 feet off the breakwater quite often so there is def. salmon around.

I've caaugt salmon there before but nothing big and always later into august and september. By all accounts the salmon are running late this year too so your chances from the breakwater are slim. Lingcod can still be caught but the area is heavily fished for them and populations have dwindled. As was already said you may be better off hitting a local lake for some raibow action.

OK so fromwhat I'm hearing so far my only chance at catching some salmon off the break water is to go to the very end and cast out as far as I can. can anyone tell me lure type and weight

Well Steve, I would throw out a Buzzbomb or Zinger lure. It is already weighted and you can jig it up and down.

Ya a buzz bomb would be the way to go. The very end is ok, there are a couple of bends in the breakwater that are good too. Mostly you will have to fish between the kelp beds though, wherever that may be. About 3 years ago someone trolling in a boat hit a spring close to 50 really close to there!

There is a boat rental out at Pedder Bay and that is your best chance a salmon. But beware they ripped me off when I went there so be careful.
