Over the week-end I had a chance to get down to my boat and do a few things. It happened to be safety day and just for the hell of it I got my boat checked. All the safety stuff was there but you now need to have the papers for your 13K # on the boat. The guy who checked my boat was saying that it $150 fine that goes to ICBC of all places. He knows of at least few boats including fined for not having papers including a crash boat for another yatch club.
Appernently there is also going to be a bliz on boating this summer since the boater ticket is madaitory and the Coast Guard, Police and Harbour Patrol now have the same mandate. Of course I've heard that every year and have only had the Coast Guard check my boat one in the mid-90' and haven't seen fisheries out since the early 90'.
Have fun, Jason

That sounds a little anal...Papers for boat numbers that were issued years ago,,come on , they really need to get with the program....I can understand having the new papers if you have a recent boat with the BC numbers as they don't use "K" numbers anymore...but to expect someone to still have his papers for "K" numbers issued 20 years ago,,,,,,good luck......
Quess there will be a flood of poor boaters trying to get new readable papers for their old tubs..... :wallbash:
Hey Guys

I ran into that last summer at Island 22, they weren't checking those with numbers but any boats that came or went that did not have numbers on them were all being pulled off to the side by the RCMP. I remember when I was a kid that my dad always had the paper for his numbers in the chart bag in case he was asked for them. So when I got my boat and the numbers for it I photo copied the registration paper and had it laminated and I keep it in a my dry box in the storage compartment, just in case.

Are you talking about the PCOC (Pleasure Craft Operators Card)? If so there are some regs that state some require the card but others do not until 2009.

Q. Who needs the Pleasure Craft Operator Card and when?

A. All operators of powered watercraft used for recreational purposes within Canada will eventually require the card. The following three groups of boaters require the card IMMEDIATELY:

* All operators of any powered watercraft under 4m in length (13.1ft)
* All operators of PWC's (i.e.: sea-doos and jet skis)
* All operators of any powered watercraft born after April 1, 1983

As of September 15, 2009 all boaters will be required to have the Pleasure Craft Operator Card in order to operate a powered watercraft. There is no grandfather clause or age exemption – this law applies to all boaters. Powered watercraft includes watercraft fitted with any size motor – even a trolling motor.
As of last year they still issue "K" numbers for BC boats . I just registered mine that was purchased out of province and got new numbers . I havent been checked for my registration yet but just like my truck I carry my registration ( proof of ownership) with me .
Dan
I Agree with Dan about carrying the registration with me when I’m on the water, Services Canada told me it was the law when I transferred my K# last year.

Just don't want a hassel on the water you know!

No, I talking about the registration papers that come with your old 13K # or the new BC # and not the opperators card.

OK then that makes sense. I have my numbers on my boat, but have forgotten to bring the papers with me a few times. RCMP has never hassled me yet, but I made a stash for the papers on the boat so they are not forgotten!

A fine in the water would sure put a dampen on a relaxing fishing trip!
