I always try to stop reeling or stripping line when a fish jumps if I can sense it in time. Since my original post I have done a little experimenting and lowering the rod tip or even submerging it in the water if you have time seems to work well for controlling the fish and preventing Tippett breaking or hook spitting.
I know that the odd times I fish for coho when I get a jumper I try and reel in the slack but pointing my tip down...again it happens so fast it doesn't always happen. I just keep fighting and hope they don't don't get off.
