Why is it that everyone packs onto the east side of the river at Grassy bar, but no one fishes directly across from it?

As this is my first year on the river, I've never been over there to check depth, etc..I'm sure there's a perfectly good explanation.

there are a few snags there on the lower part, and the water is much lower. On your way to Grassy you will pass Wellingdon bar ( it the one with the tents to your right) it is very shallow there, and mostly reserved for jet boats. The main channel where fish go is too far to cast from shore... your basically casting into 2 feet of water till about 40 feet off shore, then it gets deep again.
The funny thing about the river is that we try to get away from the crowds by being in our boats.. the only problem is that the crowds are at the right spots.... Many people fishing an area is a very good indication of a good fishing spot.

Hoochie,

Thanks for the reply. I know Wellington and have bar fished there, but I'm referring to the bank literally opposite Grassy. Is that the spot where you say there are snags?

Yeah, Monday was unreal. I couldn't believe the "sea of humanity". I was in the relatively quiet upper part and I used my binoculars to see the lower-end...UNBELIEVABLE.

Anyhow, we fished for 7 hours and didn't get a single bite...that we know of :D. We went home empty handed.

Fishing at grassy can be great you just need to be in the right spot, the fish come up behind the big snag at the bottom , circle around close to shore, then about mid bar the fish begin to scatter again into the middle where they begin to school up and head up. Short cast near the bottom, long bomb at the top end.
